Exploring the Alpine town of Brienz in Switzerland

Exploring the Alpine town of Brienz in Switzerland

A bucket list trip! Not because its Switzerland, because I was taking my parents first time on a Europe trip.  We belong from Himachal in India. The Land of Himalayas. With unparalleled beauty of the mountains and some very unexplored beautiful places, we are people from mountains. However this was going to be very exciting. From one mountain to another. Himalayas to Alps. For me, this wasn’t my first trip to Swiss countryside. Back in 2014, I visited Wilderswil which was an absolute postcard perfect village in Interlaken. But this trip would be special as I take my parents to see this beautiful country.

Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Brienz is the quintessential fairy-tale town that captured my heart from the moment I arrived. Just a short boat ride away from Interlaken, it made for an unforgettable day trip with my parents that was nothing short of magical. We were staying at Lauterbrunnen. We took a boat ride from Interlaken to Brienz thru the stunning Brienzersee. Here’s why Brienz should be on every traveler’s Swiss itinerary.

Why Visit Brienz?

Brienz is a town where time seems to slow down, allowing you to soak in every detail of its picturesque scenery. Known for its traditional woodcarving heritage and positioned by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Brienz (Brienzsee), this charming destination is perfect for those seeking both natural beauty and cultural immersion. The emerald lake surrounded by towering, snow-capped peaks feels almost surreal—it’s the kind of place where you have to pause and wonder if you’re inside a painting.

How to Reach the Town of Brienz

Getting to Brienz is straightforward and part of the charm of visiting this scenic destination is the journey itself. Here are a few options to consider:

1. By Train: Switzerland’s rail network is one of the most efficient and scenic in the world, and reaching Brienz by train is no exception. From major cities like Zurich or Lucerne, you can take a direct or connecting train through Interlaken Ost. The journey from Interlaken Ost to Brienz takes about 20 minutes, passing through breathtaking landscapes along the way. If you’re traveling from Zurich, expect a journey of approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

2. By Boat: For a truly unique experience, take a boat from Interlaken across Lake Brienz. This option offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a tranquil cruise on the lake’s emerald waters, and this was our route as well. The boat ride takes around 75 minutes and is an experience I highly recommend. It’s the perfect way to transition from Interlaken’s lively atmosphere to the serene embrace of Brienz.

3. By Car: If you prefer the flexibility of driving, Brienz is accessible via well-maintained roads. From Interlaken, it’s a scenic 20-minute drive along Route 6. From Zurich or Lucerne, the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, offering stunning views of the Swiss countryside. Parking is available in the town, though spaces can fill up quickly during peak seasons.

4. By Bus: The PostBus service connects Brienz with other local towns and regions, providing a more budget-friendly option while still letting you enjoy the picturesque journey through the Swiss Alps.

Regardless of how you choose to reach Brienz, the route is part of the adventure, with each mile offering vistas that set the stage for the beauty awaiting in this lakeside haven.

Where to Stay

While I visited Brienz as a day trip, staying overnight or longer can be equally rewarding. For those planning to extend their stay, Grandhotel Giessbach is an iconic option. Perched above Lake Brienz and offering breathtaking views, it’s a place where you can wake up to the gentle sound of waterfalls and birdsong. For a cozier experience, Hotel Brienzerburli in the town center blends rustic charm with comfort, perfect for a more intimate stay.

What to See and Do

Start your day with a leisurely stroll along Hauptstrasse, the main street of Brienz. Each wooden chalet, adorned with meticulously carved facades, tells its own story. You’ll often hear the rhythmic tap-tap of a craftsman working on a piece in one of the woodcarving workshops. Brienz is renowned for this tradition, so visiting the Swiss Woodcarving Museum (Schweizer Holzbildhauerei Museum) is a must to fully appreciate this centuries-old craft.

For nature enthusiasts, Giessbach Falls is an unmissable sight. A short hike or a funicular ride from Grandhotel Giessbach will reward you with a mesmerizing waterfall that cascades down 500 meters through a lush, green forest. If you’re visiting in the summer, the weather is perfect for taking a dip in Lake Brienz; there’s something undeniably refreshing about swimming in the glacial waters surrounded by towering mountains.

Of course, a boat ride across Lake Brienz is essential. Our trip from Interlaken to Brienz was filled with moments of awe as we glided over aquamarine waters so clear, you could see the ripples of the currents beneath. With the wind in our hair and the panoramic views around us, it was a memory I’ll cherish forever.

Don’t miss Brienz Rothorn Railway, the oldest steam cog railway in Switzerland. The journey to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn takes about an hour and offers an unbeatable 360-degree view of the Swiss Alps. On a clear day, the sight stretches all the way to the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Wandering through Brienz’s narrow streets, you’ll stumble upon unique artisan shops and local cafes. One spot I found particularly charming was Huggler-Wyss woodcarving workshop, where you can browse or buy intricate, hand-carved souvenirs that make perfect keepsakes.

Where to Eat and Drink

We enjoyed a cozy meal at Steinbock, a restaurant that serves Swiss specialties like rösti and fondue, perfect for refueling after a day of exploring. For a sweet treat, stop by Cafe Walz, known for their pastries and coffee with a view of the lake.

What Next?

Brienz is ideally located for further Alpine adventures. After exploring Brienz, I recommend heading to the nearby town of Meiringen, famous as the birthplace of meringue and for the Reichenbach Falls, the dramatic setting for Sherlock Holmes’ final battle.

Final Thoughts

My visit to Brienz was more than just sightseeing—it was an immersion into a peaceful way of life, where nature and tradition go hand in hand. Sitting by the edge of the lake, with my parents next to me and the sun slowly dipping behind the mountains, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for places like this that remind us to pause, breathe, and simply be. All along the way we kept drawing comparisons between Himalayas and Alps. Needless to say Swiss countryside is so well manicured that it looks like a painting. Since I moved to the UK, I have had very less chance to explore Himalayan scenery, but I can say that the beauty of mountains is simply incomparable to any other landscape.

So, whether you’re in search of outdoor adventure, a taste of Swiss heritage, or a tranquil escape, Brienz is the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression.
