Why you should visit Budva : Montenegro’s adriatic gem

I was on a bus from Podgorica to Kotor, half asleep with an open mouth. It was a sunny day. The bus felt descending on the route which woke me up. I had the window seat as very few passengers were in the bus. And then I see the gorgeous landscape from the window of blue adriatic sea bordered by a sandy beach and lots of buildings. I checked my current location on Google Maps and we were in Budva!

Nestled on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, Budva combines a rich tapestry of history, stunning beaches, and an energetic vibe that makes it a must-visit destination. For anyone seeking a mix of sun, sea, and cultural heritage, Budva has something unique to offer, all framed by Montenegro’s unspoiled natural beauty. The bus stopped and few tourists got in. We waited for sometime at the bus station and then started our journey back to Kotor. I quickly hopped on the other side so I can get a glimpse of the same views on return trip. And as we ascended up the serpentine roads, there it was the stunning views of Budva. I decided I had to come back here during my next few days of stay in Montenegro. And in next few days I was here to spend a day.

A Glimpse into Budva’s History

Budva is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic, with roots tracing back over 2,500 years. Originally inhabited by the ancient Greeks and later by the Romans, Budva’s rich past is reflected in its architecture, particularly in the stunning medieval Old Town. Through centuries, this coastal gem has seen Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences, making it a fascinating mix of cultures and styles. Each stone wall, narrow alleyway, and weathered building tells a story, giving visitors a chance to step back in time.

Why Travel to Budva?

So my reasons I shared in the opening lines of this post. And when I was researching about places to visit in Montenegro, Budva was standing out a favourite with British tourists. Probably because if its party destination vibe.

Budva is a haven for beach lovers, history enthusiasts, and adventurers alike. The city’s coastline boasts some of Montenegro’s most scenic beaches, with sparkling waters that are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Beyond the beaches, Budva’s Old Town is an absolute delight, and you’ll find endless entertainment options—from bustling bars to serene seaside promenades. And if you’re a fan of nightlife, Budva’s vibrant clubs and events are legendary across Europe. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to balance relaxation with a hint of adventure.

How to Reach Budva

I traveled to Budva from Kotor. I boarded a bus from the Kotor station which takes about 30-40 minutes. The cost was around 5 Euros. There is an online timetable available so you can time your return.

The nearest airport is Tivat, about 20 kilometers away. Direct flights operate during the summer season, or you can opt for a connecting flight via Belgrade or Dubrovnik. From Tivat, you can reach Budva by taxi or bus within 30 minutes. Alternatively, Podgorica Airport, Montenegro’s main airport, is about an hour’s drive. Once in Montenegro, bus connections are convenient and inexpensive, making it easy to explore beyond Budva.

Pro Tip – The bus station in Budva is a decent 15-20 minutes walk from the beach and old town. You may want to budget that time and effort while planning a bus trip.

Best Things to See and Do in Budva

I had a day in Budva which I spent majorly in three things : Laze on the beach and soak the stunning views; Eat some local food and beer at a restaurant which was on the beach; Roam around Old Town and get lost in its alleys which I think was very pretty and had some real quirky shops. I have listed main things which you can see or do in Budva in one day or over couple of days.

1. Stroll Through the Old Town (Stari Grad): This walled medieval area, rich in history and charm, is one of Budva’s highlights. Spend time getting lost in its labyrinthine alleys, visit the Citadel for stunning sea views, and marvel at the churches, such as St. Ivan’s.

3. Visit Sveti Stefan: This tiny island resort connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway is a sight to behold. Although entry is limited to guests, the view from a distance is iconic.

Where to Eat and Drink

Konoba Stari Grad: Located in the heart of Old Town, this cozy spot serves delicious Montenegrin seafood and Mediterranean dishes.

Jadran Kod Krsta: A staple in Budva, this waterfront restaurant offers fresh seafood, pasta, and a traditional ambiance with friendly service. And this is where I sat and had my fill. Trust me it was beautiful. It has a waterfront seating as you can see in my pictures. The folks serving us were very handsome and dressed as ship captains. They were so nice and explained about the food. And the food itself was gorgeous. I ordered fried calamari and chips which came with a very interesting local Spinach and Swiss Chard dish called ‘Blitva’. And I cannot wait to recreate it in my kitchen back in London.

Dukley Beach Lounge: For a more refined experience, head to this lounge with its modern decor and views over the Adriatic. The cocktails here are excellent, and it’s an ideal spot for sunset.

Casper Bar: If you’re looking to unwind in a laid-back atmosphere, Casper is perfect for evening drinks and live music in a beautiful garden setting.

Budva is so underrated compared to Dubrovnik — the old town walls and the beach access in such close proximity makes it a genuinely special place. Your point about the shoulder season being ideal for avoiding summer crowds is spot on; October in Montenegro is stunning. Adding the Sveti Stefan view to the must-see list based on your photos.

Budva is genuinely underrated on the Adriatic circuit — most travelers skip it for Kotor or Dubrovnik without realizing how much character the old town has. The nightlife tips are particularly useful since the scene there runs on a completely different schedule than Northern European travelers expect.

The contrast between the medieval old city and the modern beach scene is exactly what makes Budva worth the trip — most coastal towns are one or the other, not both at the same time. The practical note about avoiding August crowds is the kind of detail that most travel articles bury in footnotes but makes a real difference on the ground. Montenegro as a whole remains underrated for European travel in my experience.

Budva deserves far more attention than it gets — the combination of the old walled city and the Adriatic coastline is genuinely striking, and prices are still reasonable compared to Croatia. The tip about visiting outside July-August is spot on; the summer crowds completely change the atmosphere.
